Update 08/25/2008

New addition: the complete list of Grand Knights from our council provided by the Knights of Columbus of Illinois.

Grand Knight Terry Ross

This month I would like to thank all those who worked as members of the golf committee headed by Jack Guasta, for all of the time they spent on organizing another great outing.

Since the deadline for this newsletter was before the Golf Outing had taken place, I am hopeful that the weather was great and that everyone who participated had a good time. Please make sure to patronize those businesses that sponsored this year’s event.

Our next big event, our annual MR/LR Tootsie Roll Drive is coming up fast. This year we will be holding this drive on two weekends, the weekends of September 13/14 and September 19-21st. We are holding this event on two weekends in order to separate the collecting at our two parishes, SSPP and St. Thomas the Apostle, from the main event on September 19, and 20th. Hopefully this will ease the need for manpower all at once on one weekend, and will also act as a prelude for getting the word out about this most important event, a week prior to the main fundraising activity. All Knights are asked to try to volunteer a few hours one or both weekends to this crucial fund raising drive. Bill Beckwith and his team have been working with the city and the other Councils over the last few months in order to prepare for this drive. Please contact Bill as soon as you can with times you are available to help so that he can fill all the time slots in advance of the actual drive.

I would ask you this month to think about the word Opportunity and how that word relates to each of you as a Knight. What opportunities would you have missed out on if you had not become a member of the K of C? I am sure that there may be a few friendships that you might not have had if you had not become a Knight.

Perhaps you might not have participated in the pancake breakfast for example, the proceeds of which all go to Loaves and Fishes if you had not decided at one point in time in the past to become a Knight. Though in all likelihood you never saw who received help from Loaves and Fishes, I am sure that at least partially because of your efforts in working at the Breakfast with Santa event, you helped put a smile on the faces of some family because of the food they received from your work at the pancake breakfast.

So now think of the opportunity that those Catholics who haven’t been asked to join the Knights might be missing out on. All of us have been given a number of opportunities because of our membership in the K of C. Are you willing to ask one Catholic man to join our Order and Council during this fraternal year so they too might be able to be blessed with a few similar opportunities to perhaps some of those you have received through your membership in the Knights?

Vivat Jesus,

Terry
